Setting Browser Preferences

Even if you are using a compatible browser, you must ensure that your browser preferences are enabled to accept cookies and to run Java and JavaScript. Click the appropriate link below for the browser and version that you are using, then follow the steps to verify and reset your browser preferences if necessary:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0

Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later

America Online 4.0 or later

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0:

  1. Choose Tools > Internet Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

  3. Scroll down to the VM listings and make sure that JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled is checked.

  4. Click the Security tab.

  5. Click the Custom Level button.

  6. Scroll down to Cookies.

  7. Under Allow cookies that are stored on your computer, make sure Enable is checked.

    Note: You can select Prompt instead of Enable, but you will need to accept the cookie when prompted at the Professional Educational Center Web site.

  8. Click OK to save your security settings and click OK again to save and close out of the Internet Options window.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0:

  1. Choose View > Internet Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab.

  3. Scroll down to Cookies under the Security listings.

  4. Make sure Always accept cookies or Prompt me to accept cookies is checked.

    Note: if you select Prompt, you will need to accept the cookie when prompted at the Professional Educational Center Web site.

  5. Scroll down further to the Java VM listings and make sure that JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled is checked.

  6. Click OK to save your settings close out of the Internet Options window.

Netscape Communicator 4.0 or later:

  1. Choose Edit > Preferences.

  2. In the Preferences box that appears, click Advanced in the Category field to select it.

    Note: Clicking the [+] sign will display only the subcategories under the Advanced branch; you must click the word "Advanced" so that it is highlighted.

  3. On the right side of the Preferences box, make sure the following boxes are all checked: Enable Java, Enable JavaScript, Enable style sheets, and Accept all cookies.

    Note: if you also select the box next to Warn me before accepting a cookie, you must accept the cookie when prompted at the Professional Education Center.

  4. Click OK to save your changes and close out of Preferences.

Note: Netscape browsers prior to version 4.0.6 use security certificates that expired December 31, 1999. If you use Netscape version 4.0.5 or earlier to access a Web page that use certificates, you will receive a pop-up box warning you that the certificate authority has expired. You can usually close the warning box and continue without further issue, but the warning box will continue to appear each time you access a site that uses certificates. America Online 4.0 or later

America Online users: please refer to your AOL Help documentation for instructions on how to enable AOL to accept cookies and run Java and JavaScript.
